At the (DES)'s Buildings & Grounds Division, we are currently hiring a new Stationary Engineer 3 . A skilled journey-level operator that maintains and operates the Powerhouse to provide steam for heating, hot water generation; and chilled water for heating and cooling to the Capitol Campus facilities. As a senior-level specialist, applies advanced technical knowledge in the overall operation and maintenance of high pressure heating plant consisting of two or more boilers over 150 HP each.

In this position, you will be responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Powerhouse. You will ensure that all preventative maintenance and repairs to Powerhouse equipment and components are scheduled and completed in a timely manner. The position is also responsible for the monitoring the daily operations of the Capitol Lake Dam and to receive and dispatch after-hours emergency and non-emergency response for DES owned facilities within Thurston County.

  • Duties: More of what you'll enjoy doing:
  • Provide day-to-day maintenance and operations of the Powerhouse.
  • Operate the high-pressure steam heating plant, which provides steam heat, hot and chilled water to 14 buildings on the Capitol Campus.
  • Utilize the Metasys central control system to make adjustments to the campus steam and chilled water systems.
  • Maintain boiler water and feedwater test and treatment.
  • Ensure that steam and chill water is produced to support all buildings that are supported by the Powerhouse.
  • Make shift and work assignments to maintain Powerhouse coverage 24 hours/day, 365 days/year.
  • Make mandatory walkthroughs for the boilers, chillers and other related auxiliary equipment.
  • Record all required readings in the maintenance logs and plant logbook at the time of the readings.
  • Work with the Powerhouse and Trade Supervisors to develop and implement communications plans for steam outages when required to perform repairs to the Powerhouse or the steam distribution system.
  • Identify individual training needs and requirements and works with management to obtain and maintain employee's licenses and certifications.
  • Prepare daily and monthly reports for management review and initiates supply and maintenance requirements.
  • Monitor the lake levels and ensure the Metasys control system is operating the Capitol Lake Dam properly, ensuring that the lake is at acceptable levels at both high and low levels.
  • Coordinate all required boiler inspections with the appropriate agencies to include, but not limited to high-pressure boiler hot and cold and regional air quality monitoring inspections.
  • Initiate incident reports when required and log these into the Mainsaver system and plant logbooks as appropriate.
  • Understand and follow DES safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow DES standards to maintain a safe work environment to include use and wear of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Report injuries, accidents, or hazards to your supervisor immediately and complete accident reports within 24 hours of the occurrence.
  • Qualifications: Required Qualifications:

    **The Powerhouse functions are critical to the daily operations of the Capitol Campus. The Powerhouse must be staffed on a 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.

    High school graduate or GED required;

    AND

    Four (4) years of experience in operations, maintenance and repairs of high pressure boilers and heating equipment;

    OR

    One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 2 in State service;

    OR

    Three (3) years as a Propulsion Engineer

    Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Good working knowledge of Powerhouse standards and best practices, methods, tools and equipment necessary to operate and maintain high pressure steam boilers and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Knowledge of: boiler law; methods, fuels, materials, and tools used in operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment; boiler room safety; heating, lighting, ventilating, power, and other related mechanical equipment; standard types of automatic controls.
  • Ability to: test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment; instruct and supervise others; keep records; make written reports; perform heavy manual labor; work under and withstand extremes of temperature.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans and sketches; estimate labor and materials required to accomplish the work.
  • Use of hand, power, precision measuring and specialized tools required to accomplish high-pressure boiler operations and repairs.
